Chapter 116 Goodbye

Chapter 116 Goodbye

Looking at the phone that had been hung up, Zhao Meng tossed it aside in frustration. How could this woman, who looked so delicate, be so shrewd and stubborn?

I glanced at the time; it was already past 3 p.m. I wondered how things were going with Chen Zhi.

After hanging up with Zhao Meng, Xu Ao called. "Hey, you two are pretty in sync, how did you figure it out?" Huang Meng said with a smug smile.

"Huang Meng, let's meet," Xu Ao said calmly on the other end of the line.

"Okay, send me the time and location." Huang hung up the phone without hesitation after saying that.

She glanced at the documents on the desk. She was certain Xu Ao would agree because she knew that if she persisted, he could find a way to take her. Rules are rules, but people are flexible; if he wanted, he only needed to submit a report. The situation there was complex and dangerous; how could he possibly take such a large batch of supplies alone, especially since the supplies were being sent in the name of Zhao Meng's company? It wouldn't be unreasonable for her, as the company's translator, to go along!

Huang Meng looked at the message Xu Ao sent on her phone, immediately put on her clothes and went downstairs. He drove to pick her up.

As soon as Huang Meng left the residential area, she saw Xu Ao leaning against his car. He looked much more weathered than before.

"Where are we going?" Huang Meng looked at him with some heartache, but now was not the time to feel sorry for him. She had not yet achieved her goal and had to keep a straight face.

"Let's go." Xu Ao gave her a deep look and said calmly.

Huang Meng found his state strange. Even if he had taken the documents, he should have just gone with her as promised. Why did he look so tragic?

Huang Meng didn't think much of it. She got into the car and looked at Xu Ao, who remained silent the entire way.

"How did you end up here?" This was the place where they had taken a walk together last time. It was then, as the sun slowly set, that he listened to Huang Meng tell him her story.

"Do you remember that day when we were walking and you were telling me about your childhood? I thought to myself, why didn't I meet you back then? Why didn't I have the chance to be a part of your youth? I really wanted to see what the impetuous, innocent, and adorable you were like back then." Xu Ao looked up into the distance and said calmly.

“When I met you, you were so resilient and strong. A girl, braving the flames of war alone, you had the courage and wisdom to work with me and our colleagues at the embassy to solve many difficult problems. Huang Meng, you are special. You look petite, but you have a powerful explosive force. You are very beautiful. I admit, I fell in love with you at first sight, or you could say I was attracted by your looks. However, what attracted me was you as a person.” Xu Ao finished speaking and turned to look at Huang Meng.

As the story unfolded, Huang Meng seemed to guess what he was about to say, and said coldly, "Xu Ao, just say what you have to say. This isn't like you."

"Yeah, it really does sound like a plot from a cheesy TV drama, doesn't it? But sometimes, some things just need this kind of setup. After all, I don't want to be the bad guy who stabs you in the back right away."

"What exactly are you trying to say?" Huang Meng looked at his fake smile and was clearly losing patience.

"let's break up."

"Hmph, is this the solution you came up with? I'm sorry to have troubled you, spending the whole afternoon thinking about just one sentence." Huang Meng suddenly felt like laughing. She guessed that this was an excuse Xu Ao came up with to keep her away from him.

"No matter what you think, I've said what I wanted to say. Now, please return my things to me. Otherwise, you'll be detained for stealing confidential documents, if not imprisoned," Xu Ao said coldly.

"Xu Ao, you..."

"I have something to do and I'm in a hurry, so please hurry up." Xu Ao stared at Huang Meng's face, not giving her a chance to speak.

Looking at Xu Ao's calm face and his cold eyes, this was the first time he had ever looked at her like that.

"Xu Ao, even without you, I would find a way to go." Huang Meng knew he was determined to get his things back, so she took the documents out of her bag and threw them to him before turning and leaving.

Xu Ao watched her turn and leave, feeling a pang of pain in his heart, but it was the best way he could think of to protect her.

In the afternoon, he received a last-minute notification that his flight the next morning might be the last to S country, which had been placed under complete control under the pretext of political takeover.

No one from other countries, regardless of the reason, can enter. If they are lucky, they will survive this wave of sanctions and achieve true independence. If not, the US will cease to exist, and the situation of their embassy will be unimaginable. It would be good if they could evacuate safely.

Xu Ao sighed and picked up the documents from the ground. He was not one to admit defeat easily, but this time, he did. He had lost because of his love for her.

"Goodbye, Huang Meng," Xu Ao murmured, looking in the direction she left.
